Strikes and protests continue
Here is the latest report from the website of the Kazakh Socialist Movement (http://socialismkz.info) on the demonstrations and workers’ struggles that are continuing in the Mangistau region, where the January movement started. Amidst the silence of the Italian and international media, and despite the repression that killed 225 demonstrators and arrested 10,000, workers and unemployed are once again challenging the bosses and state authorities, in the streets and through strikes. They are demanding the release of imprisoned comrades, wage increases, work for the thousands of dismissed workers, employment guarantees including through the re-nationalisation of privatised enterprises, the resignation and impeachment of President Tokayev for the repression, and they are replacing trade union leaders who have colluded with the power.
We give all our class and internationalist solidarity to the Kazakh proletarians who courageously have resumed their struggle – they are teaching the proletarians of all other countries a lesson.
RALLYS AND STRIKES ARE GOING ON IN MANGISTAU REGION AND WORKERS PROTESTS BEGIN IN OTHER REGIONS

Due to the fact that employers and authorities in Zhanaozen refuse to make concessions to the striking workers and unemployed protesters, the protesters are noticeably radicalized and politicized. Everywhere there is a demand for the release of all those arrested during the January events. The authorities and the owners, for their part, begin a campaign of discredit in the local press and in the social networks of the striking workers, which further exacerbates the situation.
In Zhanaozen, at the bus station, for the sixth day, meetings of striking workers of Burgylau LLP continue, demanding not only higher wages, better working conditions, but also the immediate nationalization of their enterprise, which was privatized in the interests of Timur Kulibayev back in 2005 according to a letter from Nursultan Nazarbayev. Despite the fact that the Ministry of Energy refused to nationalize, the workers continue to insist on their own, removed the corrupt chairman of the trade union committee and elected a new one, in fact, reviving their trade union anew.
On Monday, February 14, at a meeting, the strikers also put forward political demands. They were outraged by the stories about the scope of repression and torture in the country. The speaker on behalf of the audience stated that those who were beaten in the pre-trial detention center are not terrorists, including those 227 people who died as a result of the president’s order to “shoot to kill.” In this connection, the speaker called on Tokayev to step down from his post and face trial. The court, according to the workers, should be independent. And those who are now in prison as a result of arrests should be released immediately. This statement was supported by the assembled strikers with a cry of “We demand!”
According to the situation on Monday evening, employees of the Zhanaozen branch of the RTsKU-Aktau also went on strike, who, in addition to raising wages, demand that their enterprise be included in the Kazakhgas company. Until now, these requirements have not been met and the employees continued their protest, holding meetings near the office building and warming themselves in the tents set up on February 10.
On February 14, a mass rally of the unemployed took place in Zhanaozen near the city akimat, at which new demands were made to the authorities. The representative of the protesters who came out read the statement aloud:
– Cancel the moratorium on hiring, introduced at oil production enterprises from 2022! Let the staff of Ozenmunaigas (Production branch of KazMunayGas – Ed. note) be expanded and the unemployed will be employed in the companies serving it! Create new jobs in oil and gas production. We, the unemployed population of the city of Zhanaozen, demand that Tokaev Kassym-Jomart Kemelevich come to this region and solve our problem as soon as possible!
After that, the crowd shouted “We demand!”, showing that they join and approve of what was said.
On the same day, on Monday, employees of FTC WIN LLP, which services Ozenmunaigas, went on strike, and they also posted a video on a social network announcing that they were stopping work.
– Among us are low-income citizens, mothers of large families. Due to rising market prices, it is becoming increasingly difficult to support a family. We are forced to stop work due to non-fulfillment of our requirements. We demand that we be transferred to the staff of the promising oil and gas industry! says one of the meeting participants in the video.
It is noteworthy, but even the workers of the veterinary station of the Beineu district of the Mangystau region have declared their desire to go on strike from March 1. They put forward the demand for an immediate increase in wages by 68% and the accrual of the required allowances. In their petition, which was also sent to the Minister of Agriculture, employees of the veterinary services talk about the plight of the social situation and low salaries. Doctor of the highest category with 15-40 years of experience, monthly salary does not exceed 50-70 thousand tenge (112-162 dollars).
Such strikes or threats of strikes are heard not only in the Mangistau region. So, on February 11, in the neighboring Atyrau region, workers of Neftestroyservice Ltd LLP, which is reconstructing the wastewater treatment plant at the Atyrau Refinery, organized a strike, demanding a 50% increase in wages. In the Aktobe region, utility workers and the staff of some oilfield service companies also demanded a 100% increase in wages. And the government was forced on Monday to urgently hold a meeting on the fact of the pre-strike situation in the aviation industry.
Therefore, the protest potential of the labor movement has not gone away, but rather is growing, as employers and authorities do not make concessions, but initiate lawsuits against strikers and deny the very possibility of nationalization. This further radicalizes the protesting workers and the unemployed in Zhanaozen, who no longer hesitate to demand Tokayev’s resignation.

Nel silenzio dei media italiani e internazionali, e nonostante la repressione che ha ucciso 225 dimostranti e ne ha arrestati 10 mila (questi i dati ufficiali, la realtà della repressione è più pesante ancora), lavoratori e disoccupati tornano a sfidare padroni e autorità statali, nelle piazze e con lo sciopero. Chiedono il rilascio dei compagni incarcerati, aumenti salariali, lavoro per le migliaia di lavoratori licenziati, garanzie occupazionali anche tramite la ri-nazionalizzazione di imprese privatizzate, le dimissioni e la messa sotto accusa del presidente Tokayev per la repressione, e sostituiscono i dirigenti sindacali collusi con il potere.

MANIFESTAZIONI E SCIOPERI CONTINUANO NELLA REGIONE DI MANGISTAU, MENTRE IN ALTRE REGIONI INIZIANO PROTESTE DEI LAVORATORI

Dato che gli imprenditori e le autorità di Zhanaozen si rifiutano di fare concessioni ai lavoratori in sciopero e ai manifestanti disoccupati, i manifestanti sono notevolmente radicalizzati e politicizzati. Ovunque si chiede la liberazione di tutti gli arrestati durante gli avvenimenti di gennaio. Le autorità e i padroni, da parte loro, iniziano una campagna di discredito dei lavoratori in sciopero nella stampa locale e nei social network, che aggrava ulteriormente la situazione.
A Zhanaozen, alla stazione degli autobus, per il sesto giorno, continuano le assemblee dei lavoratori in sciopero della Burgylau LLP, che chiedono non solo salari più alti, migliori condizioni di lavoro, ma anche l’immediata nazionalizzazione della loro impresa, privatizzata nell’interesse di Timur Kulibayev già nel 2005 secondo una lettera di Nursultan Nazarbayev. Nonostante il fatto che il Ministero dell’Energia si sia rifiutato di nazionalizzare, i lavoratori continuano a insistere, hanno rimosso il presidente corrotto del comitato sindacale e ne hanno eletto uno nuovo, di fatto, facendo rivivere di nuovo il loro sindacato.
Lunedì 14 febbraio, in una riunione, gli scioperanti hanno avanzato anche richieste politiche. Erano indignati dalle storie sulla portata della repressione e della tortura nel paese. L’oratore a nome del pubblico ha dichiarato che coloro che sono stati picchiati nel centro di detenzione preventiva non sono terroristi, comprese quelle 227 persone che sono morte in seguito all’ordine del presidente di “sparare per uccidere”. A questo proposito, l’oratore ha invitato Tokayev a dimettersi dal suo incarico e ad affrontare il processo. Il tribunale, secondo i lavoratori, dovrebbe essere indipendente. All’altezza di lunedì sera [14 febbraio] hanno scioperato anche i dipendenti della filiale di Zhanaozen della RTsKU-Aktau, i quali, oltre all’aumento dei salari, chiedono che la loro impresa sia inclusa nella società Kazakhgas. Finora queste richieste non sono state soddisfatte e i dipendenti hanno continuato la loro protesta, tenendo riunioni vicino all’edificio degli uffici e scaldandosi nelle tende allestite il 10 febbraio.
Il 14 febbraio, una manifestazione di massa dei disoccupati ha avuto luogo a Zhanaozen vicino all’Akimat [municipio] della città, durante la quale sono state fatte nuove richieste alle autorità. Il rappresentante dei manifestanti uscito ha letto ad alta voce la dichiarazione:
– Annullate la moratoria sulle assunzioni, introdotta nelle imprese di produzione di petrolio a partire dal 2022! Che il personale di Ozenmunaigas [ramo di produzione di KazMunayGas – n.] sia ampliato e che i disoccupati siano impiegati nelle imprese che lo servono! Creare nuovi posti di lavoro nella produzione di petrolio e gas. Noi, la popolazione disoccupata della città di Zhanaozen, chiediamo che Tokaev Kassym-Jomart Kemelevich venga in questa regione e risolva il nostro problema il più presto possibile! Dopo questo, la folla ha gridato ”Lo esigiamo!”, mostrando che si uniscono e approvano ciò che è stato detto.
Lo stesso giorno, lunedì, i dipendenti di FTC WIN LLP, che presta servizi a Ozenmunaigas, sono entrati in sciopero, e hanno anche postato un video su un social network annunciando l’interruzione del lavoro.
– Tra di noi ci sono cittadini a basso reddito, madri di famiglie numerose. A causa dell’aumento dei prezzi di mercato, è sempre più difficile mantenere una famiglia. Siamo costretti a smettere di lavorare a causa del mancato soddisfacimento delle nostre richieste. Chiediamo di essere trasferiti al personale della ricca industria del petrolio e del gas!, dice uno dei partecipanti all’incontro nel video.
È degno di nota che anche i lavoratori della stazione veterinaria del distretto di Beineu della regione di Mangystau hanno dichiarato la loro volontà di scioperare dal 1° marzo. Hanno avanzato la richiesta di un aumento immediato dei salari del 68% e la maturazione delle indennità dovute. Nella loro petizione, che è stata inviata anche al ministro dell’agricoltura, i dipendenti dei servizi veterinari parlano della difficile situazione sociale e dei bassi salari. Il medico della categoria più alta con 15-40 anni di esperienza, ha uno stipendio mensile che non supera i 50-70 mila tenge (112-162 dollari).
Tali scioperi o minacce di sciopero si sentono non solo nella regione di Mangistau. Così, l’11 febbraio, nella vicina regione di Atyrau, i lavoratori della Neftestroyservice Ltd LLP, che sta ricostruendo l’impianto di trattamento delle acque reflue della raffineria di Atyrau, hanno organizzato uno sciopero, chiedendo un aumento del 50% dei salari. Nella regione di Aktobe, i lavoratori dei servizi pubblici e il personale di alcune società di servizi petroliferi hanno anche chiesto un aumento del 100% dei salari. E il governo è stato costretto lunedì a tenere urgentemente una riunione sulla situazione di pre-sciopero nel settore dell’aviazione.
Quindi, il potenziale di protesta del movimento operaio non è scomparso, anzi sta crescendo, dato che gli imprenditori e le autorità non fanno concessioni, ma avviano azioni legali contro gli scioperanti e negano la possibilità stessa di nazionalizzazione. Questo radicalizza ulteriormente i lavoratori in protesta e i disoccupati di Zhanaozen, che non esitano più a chiedere le dimissioni di Tokayev.
